Atwjst .14 The Star says : — « The prisoner Hall aliar Hoare, whoso attempted escape f*om the New Plymouth Gaol is mentioned in to-day** telegrams, waa not transferred from Dunedin as this telegram Bays. During hij former imprisonment in tlie gaol hero he* was very insubordinate, and wao- committed to addi* tional imprisonment for breaches of the regulations. When Sir James Ferguson visited the gaol Hoare was in one -of the cells for mieconduet, and when trlie cell door waa opened for Hie Excellency,. HUH, who was standing in the centre of thocell in a state of nudity, having torn off every portion of his clothes (in prison phraseology this- is- called 'breaking out'), paid the usual salute by raising his right hand to his hoad. He- told the Governor that ho should never wear hi clothes again. Shortly after Sir James left the cell Hall began to feel the effects of tlie ' cold, rapped at the cell door and apologised! for his conduct, and respectfully requested his clothes. His sentence being completed,, and finding that the police were keeping him. under strict surveillance, he migrated toTimaru, where, in a short time, he committed a robbery and was committed by Mr Justice' Johnston to ten years' penal servitude and sent to Ly ttelton gaol, where he wa* frequently punished for misconduct. Some time ago he was transferred from Lytfeelton to Taranaki to assist in building astone wall around the gaol there. Ho wa* first convicted at Invereargill for robbing and 1 sentenced to tour years, and for bad conduct there was removed to Dunedin. On the arrival of the steamer at the Rattray Btreefcwharf, Hall, who had a swag, was ordered, by the policeman to carry it to the Gaol, which he refused to do, saying to the polioeman;" "Carry it yourself; you are paid for that, I m not," and the constable had to carry theswag. Hall is a professional thief, and one of the most desperate characters tho police have to contend with,
