PAPANUI BAND OF HOPE.
A publio meeting wob held in St. Paul's Schoolroom on Friday evening, for tho purpose of establishing a Band of Hope and Temperance Bociety to embrace young peoplo of all the denominations. The Bey F. G. Brittan, M.A., who has shown a deep interest in ; the project, occupied the chair. The Revs W. Homer (Presbyterian) and J. B. BichardBon (Wesleyan), wore also present. The Chairman expressed the pleasure which it 'gave bim to preside at the meeting, and stated that the object was such as would enable ministers and members of various denominations to join in presenting a united front against a> common foe. Thiß was not the first meeting that had taken place there to further the proposod organisation. At the previous meeting a temporary Committee had be^nappointed to recommend what form tho ■86<jiety should assume. It would be their duty to consider the report of that Committee. The evils. of intoxication were very Widespread, and the necessity ifor earnest effort to check them could got: be i denied. With them was left: tho arrangement of the place, for, the ordinary meetings of the band and other detdils. The Ministers present placed their Beveral eohoolrooms at the disposal of the Committee for the use of tho Society. ' Tjie pledge-roll was then opened for signa : tures, the Chairman being the first to sign his name amid much applauso. In all 26 persons took the pledge their ages ranging from nine to 66 years. It was also - decided to recommend the juveniles to sign a promise not to use tobacco in any of its forme. A; hearty vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the proceedings.
