In reference to Clause 6 of my report read at last meeting of the Board, in "which I asked the Board* authority for* taking proceedings against Mr W. Hall, Poulson street, Sydenham, for a nuisance arising from the keeping of pigs, in accordance with instructions I have served notice to abate the nuisance. The city scavenger having notified to me' his wish to confine, his services within the city boundary, other provision should at once be made for a scavengering service within the Borough.. ■.>>..■-'.:.).* ■ '■,■;''>*:■ ; "4. No steps have yet been taken to abate a nuisance existing near Opawa bridge, arising from stagnant house drainage. In reply to a letter I addressed to "the Clerk of the Heathcote Road Board, he states the Board declines to interfere with the, culvert theroin referred to, and which I 'suggested should be lowered to give better drainage; i "5. Owing to the late heavy rains I found the land surrounding the eldsdts of the West Christchurch Schools, Lincoln road, to have been flooded) Several of the pans in these closets require replacing with new ernes, and to prevent the inconvenience referred to" I would recommend the closets should be removed to another part ofthe'premises, Or better, provision made for carrying off the ■tor m water from a private street and land at the back of the schools." "* :-" " :\ Clause 1 of the report was considered satisfactory. Clause 2, referring to premises in Harper street, was further explained by the Inspeotor, who remarked that but little attention had ,_as yet been paid to sanitary arrangements in Sydenham. . ; It was considered that the best 'plan would be to forward a copy ; of this clause of the. report to the Sydenham Borotigh Council, together with a copy of the succeedifig clause, and to specially - call the attention of "the Council to the necessity for adopting temporary measures for the remotal of rubbish. ; Clause" 4; was' referred to;the Chairman!; who was requested to confer with the; Chairman of tho Drainage Board, with the view of having the matter attended to at once; . In connection with clause 5, the Inspector of Nuisances said/ that a case of. fever had been reported .as existing in the back street referred to. ' " It was resolved to forward a; copy of the clause to the School Committee. • The report,' as a whole, was adopted. Scott's boad, sYDEiriiAai. In reply to the letter from the Chief Inspector of Nnisances, complaining of tho unhealthy state of Scott's road, bydenham, the Borough Council Btated that they had determined : to force the road- to be formed under the Municipal Corporations Act, 1876, &c. This would effectually put a stop to the nuisance so far as the road was concerned. The letter was considered satisfactory. , HABPEB STBEBT. "-■ The Clerk to. the Sydenham Borough Council called attention to the unhealthy state of premises ia Harper street, occupied by a Mr Moore, with a view to having the same remedied. ■■$•■■■.■. - .; - The matter had already been attended to. PAPANtn. Mr F. G. M.Brittain, M.R.0.9., drew attention to the Urgent necessity there was for doing something;, to the stinking drain in Papanui, from the Papanui Hotel to the Sawyers' Arms Hotel. Mr Hall said that this side channel was very bad indeed, and that concrete ought to be put down by tho Road Board. Members were under the impression that the Road Board had expressed their intention to do this. On reference, suoh was found to be tho case, and it was resolved to forward a copy of Mr Brittain's letter to the Road Board. COMMEBCIAI HOTBI. Mr Cookson, Commercial Hotel, asked for the indulgence of tho Board for a few days, pending tho completion of certain sanitary works reported by the Inspector as necessary. In reply to a question, the Inspeotor said notice had been duly served. It was resolved— "That the Chairman be empowered to take immediate action in th matter." INPBOTIOTTB DISBASBB. The following cases of infectious disease were reported since the last meeting of the Board :— Typhoid fever, 4 ; scarlet fever, 8 ; diphtheria, 1 j total, 8. THB PAN STSTBM. The Town Clerk wrote in reply to a letter from the Board of Health relative to the pan system, and s'.ated that the matter had been referred to the Sanitary Committee to take immediate action. This had been written in reply to a communication from the Chairman of tho Board of Health, as follows t— " Adverting to the question of the abolition of cesspits within city boundaries, and the introduction of the "I pan system in their stead, may I beg to bo informed whether the change to tho new system has been completed. By tho report of proceedings of your Council, undor date March 10 last, the Board of health were led to hope that pans would have been introduced everywhere within your boundaries by the end of April. — (Signed) R. J. S. Habman." : The Board went into Committee for tho consideration of tho subject. On resuming, it was resolved— "That the Chairman of the Board of Health be requested to place himself in communication with the Mayor of Christchurch upon sanitary matters within the city." SOAP -WORKS AT ST. ALBANS. A memorial, signed by a number of residents in St. Albans, was presented to tho Board, consenting to the manufacture of soap on tho promises of Mr Thomas Sheridan. Conditional consent was given, and the Inspector was requested to investigate the .circumstances of tho case, and. to rapoi't thereon to the Board.

The Board then adjourned.
