KAIAPOI BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary fortnightly meeting of this Council was held at the Council Chambers, Kaiapoi, on Tuesday last ; present — His Worship tho Mayor, and Councillors Parnham, Woodford, Fraser, May, Pinching, and Moore. COHEKSPOXDENCE. Letters wero read— From the Colonial 'Treasurer,- applying for throe copies, of the •_nin al balancc-shjafc.— From the Mahdeville and Rangiora Road?tßoard, stating that they were willing lo pays»lf the cost if tlio Council would metal the^B ach road. — From the District Land Hegiatfeft, informing fche Council that the Crown grantjf for fche 2000 acre reserve at; the AshburiJJn wero waiting for the Council at the Lahtf' Registry Offico on payment of the üßuasfees.— From the Colonial Treasm-er, stattbg fchafc the balance of the £ for £ subsidy; "was in course of payment. — FrouTlhe Christchurch City Council, re unemployed. — From the Under-Secretary, stating that the reserve No. 72 had been vested in tho Borough Council, and pointing oufc what steps to take to get the necessary conveyance from the Government to the Council.

Resolved, on the motion of Councillor Parnham—" That Mr Porter' he instructed to prepare the conveyance of Reserve No. 72 from fcho Governor to tho Council, aud take fche necessary steps to have ifc executed afc once." TIIE UNEMPLOYED. Resolved— " That this Council regret thafc they have no funds to carry oufc works on which to employ tho numerous unemployed." 2000 ACBB BESEBVE. Resolved — " Thafc the Clerk be authorized to pay the fees and obtain the Crown grants of the 2000 acre reserve at the Ashburton." BEACH BOAD. Resolved—" That, the letter from the Mandeville and Rangiora Road Board re Beach Koad be referred to Councillor Parnham, and he be requested to arrange the matter with the Board." WOBKB COMMITTEE. The Public Works Committee reported that during tho past fortnight they had had the east main drain cleaned oufc as decided on by the Council at fche last meeting. They had also had several small repairs executed to footpaths and sidewalks where required. The total expense of cleaning and repairing the drain had been £17 10s 6d. Resolved, that tho report be received. After a good deal of discussion, Councillor Pinching proposed, and Councillor May seconded— 'That tho report be adopted, and thafc fcho Clerk write to those persons benefited by clearing oufc fche drain, asking thorn to contribute' towards the expense." The motion was carried, Councillors Frasor and Woodford voting against ifc. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Finance Committee reported that receipts during tho past fortnight had been — Sale of timber, £4 6s 6d ; rent, £6 5s ; total, £10 lis fid. Tlio overdraft at the bank was £528 0s 6d. ACCOUNTS. On the motion of Councillor Moore, seconded by Councillor Pinching, accounts amounting to £29 Os 6d were passed for payment. VOTE OP SYMPATHY TO COUNOILLOB BOBNIP. T?esolved — " Thafc this Council tender their sincere sympathy to Councillor Burnip for.his late severe loss." WANT OF CROSSINGS. Councillor Pinching drew the attention of the Public Works Committee to the want; of proper street crossings, as during tho wet weather tho streets wero almost impassable in places. NOTICE OF MOTION. Councillor Woodford gavo in tho following notice of motion for the next meeting — " That no work be undertaken to exceed £5, except by tender. Also, fco enquire how many persons are receiving charitable aid, what amount weekly, and how disposed." The Mayor pointed oufc that the last part of the motion was not required, as Councillor Woodford could obtain tho required information afc any time from the Clerk. The Council then adjourned.
