This afternoon nn accident occurred in Wellesley street, which might have resulted in serious damage, if not in loss of life. Ab a , dray loaded with coal was passing along the streefc, fche wheel suddenly sunk, and on looking afc ifc the driver found that it had pierced a thin orusfc of road metal about five inches thick, beneath which was a vast cavity, at least eight feet deep. He unharnessed the horses, and left the dray to its fate. On examination it was found fchafc abont 20 feet of the brick sewer had fallen in, and the earth - had been continually washed away, until a large portion of the middle was undermined, and only the thin hard crust on the top supported the traffic. How long it has been in . this condition of course thero is no knowing. . Had the dray been crossing the sfcreefc the ' hones would have fallen into the cavity.
