CHRISTCHURCH HEBREW SCHOOL.

The prizes awarded afc the lato examination to children attending tho above school were presented to the successful scholars on Thursday evening afc the Oddfellows' Hall. Tho opportunity wa9 takon advantage of to give the children a tea (for which a special subscription list was opened, and a good sum collected) and an entertainment. At ono of the festival services at the Synagogue this week the children 1 were apprised of fche treat in store for them, and consequently a large number attended, over 60 being seatod at the tea-tables in the room behind tho hall. The whole of fche tea arrangements wero under the able superintendence of Mrs Raphael, and this lady deserves every credit for the way in which tliis part of the entertainment was carried out. Ifc is only fair fco state, however, that Mrs Raphael was assisted by Mra D. Caro, while the unremitting attention of about 20 young ladies to the wants of fcho children evidently gavo general satisfaction. Several of the parents of tho children wero ulso prcsont. Tho tables were bountifully suppliod with cako, bread ancl butter, fruit, confectionery, &c, and consequently looked very inviting to the children. Shortly aftor five o'clock, graco having been said, the youngsters were all served, and evidently did ample justico to tho good things provided. As soon as tea-was concluded, all adjourned to tho fronb hall, and the young onos indulged in sundry games previous to receiving their prizes. The children and fcheir eldors having been seatod in the body of fcho hall, tho Committee took their seats on the stage, and a table displaying the prizes was brought to the front of fcho platform. Mr L. E. Nathan (President of the Jewish congregation) presented the prizes, but bofore commencing addressed the children in appropriate termß at some length. Mr Nathan, in handing over the lucky ones their prizes, accompanied the presentation with a few apropos remarks. The children, as each prize-holder descended from the platform demonstrated their approval in a very unanimous manner, by applause, cheering, &c. After the distribution was concluded, cheers wero called by the children for their teacher, tlio Rev I. Zachariah, and a similar compliment was paid to Mr L. E. Nathan. The following iB tho prizo list : — Class I— J, JJacharaioh, 1 ; Edward Nathan,

Clasß 2— Hyam Zacbariah and Frederick Raphael, equal 1. Class 3— Charleß Zichariab, 1 ; Joseph Nuthan, 2. Class 4— A. Caro, 1 ; Erresfc Nabhan and Ernesb Harris, oqual 2. Class s— Eugenie Davis, 1 ; Bcbsi'o Simpson and Lilly Harris, equal 2. Class 6 A— Flora Lezard, 1 ; Lena Cobon, 2 ; Albert Lezard, 3. Good attendance Prize— Ernest Nathan and Ernest Harris. Good Conduct prize— Bortio Nathan. Rev I. Zachariah's prizes for Good Attendance—Joseph H. Nathan, Kato Raphael Kdward Harris, and Abraham Barsht. . - ■■ After a few minutes interval, tho children were treated to a series of dissolving views, for which they have to thank a well known friend. To this gentleman is due great praise for at onco placing his services afc fcho disposal of tho Committee, and going to tho trouble of conveying his largo amount of paraphernalia from a long distance. The children, by fcheir cheering, kc, seemed to be well pleased wifch his portion of the evening's amusement, and its euccess was attributed in no small degreo to his efforts. A voto of thanks, proposed by Mr L. E. Nathan, and seconded by Mr D. Caro, was unanimously recorded to tho gentleman and assistants for thoir services.

Another interval 6ucceded at the conclusion of the dissolving views. The Moore and Burgess Juvenile Mistrels then made their dibut, and a really creditable performance was gone through by thn members of this troiipp. Fifteen coloured gentlemen disposed of the usual ohair businoss, some of their comicalities being very funny ; indeed, tho majority of their jokes last night, and the comicalities of the corner men would do credit to older and more experienced " knights of the burnt cork." All the members of this troupe are youths, aud ib may be said, acquitted themselves very creditably. The Binging waa very fair indeed. Selections by fche band followed fcho first parfc of fche programme, and fchis was succeeded by a very laughable farje entitled "Tho Troublesome Servants," in which Masters H. .Stanley, 0. Moore, George Burgess and A. Mitchell took p.rl. In thi . farce Mr 0. Moore introduced a very cleverly executed solo on fche moufchrharruraicon. Tho children wero highly amused at this portion of tho evening's entertainment, at tho conclusion of whioh thoy woro all aent home.

A voto of thanks was recorded, amidst cheers, to the minstrels for their services. A dance for tho parents and young ladios and gentlemen ended a very pleasant reunion. This notice would not be complete wero we not to mention tbat much of the success of this initiatory entertainment is due to the tact and zeal exhibited by the Committee appointed. All of the members were indefatigable in their endeavours to satisfy all, and carry oufc this very pleasant affair in the completest manner.
