[bpeoial.] Mat 27. .There has been very little excitement oyer the mayoralty contest to-day. Neither side appeared well organised, and the total number of votes polled was very small. Throughout the day Mr Hutchison appeared 'to be the favourite. The result of the poll was— Hutchison, 679 ; Hunter, 644; majority for Hutchison, 35. The Court of Appeal was bcoupied all day with the case of Kawanta v. Kinross, and the Eesidenfc Magistrate's Courfc with the prosetion of Kinross for perjury.' Both cases are unfinished. The "Court of Appeal to-day upheld the conviction of Thomas Williams, Secretary of a Foresters' Court, convicted last session of embezzling the Court funds. The schooner Shepherdess, 30 tons, Captain Biley, was wrecked at Kaikoura yesterday. . During a heavy gale the sohooner parted her moorings, and was driven on the rocks, when she at onco commenced to break up. The vessel had been built about thirty years ago, and the insurance had just expired, as the Company ref used to renew, the policy because the vessel waa at sea at fche time. Mr Pender, the owner, estimates his loss at £450. A man named James Turner, whilo attempting to jump on a tram car this evening, fell and broke three of his ribß.
