THE LATE RAILWAY ACCIDENT AT LYTTELTON.

Tho damage done to the eDgine Mazappa, riiich capsized on Friday, wasfou'nd to )O considerably less than was antici>ated. The engine was taken up to the Cliriatchurch chops, and is now undergoing repairs. It will be in working order again very shortly. The cause of the accident appears to be owing to the flange of the first wheel having worn bo thin, that when it came to the points it passed in between the bevelled point of tho inner rail and the next rail, instead of running inside tho two. The

points had not been used since they were laid down, only a few days previously, and at the time of tab accident they were spiked, so as to prevent them shifting, in addition to the lever locking thorn. The Corsair passed over the same spot on Saturday, which proves that the curve at the points is not top sharp, and that there was no fault in laying the rails.
