At tho request of ihe majority of the men these resignations will not be forwarded to headquarters until a reply has been received to tho request for a Court of Enquiry. It may bo mentioned that Drill- Instructor Lewis, who had sent in his resignation after being suspended, lias withdrawn it, preferring, as a soldier of nearly 40 years' sorvico, to stand an enquiry Jnto his alleged misconduct. r & Nuisance at Bingsland.-— For some rlitlle time past an artesian well has been 'allowed to run continuously in a portion of Bingland, to the annoyance of neighbours living in the locality. Tjik Flogging or Mandehs.— John Manders, who, on April 9, was found guilty of an indecent assault upon a woman, and eenfcenced to three months' imprisonment with two Hoggings, acquired his first expo* rienco of "tlio cat" this morning. At halfpast nine o'clock he was adjusted to the triangle, and his sentence having been read over the lashes were laid on by two rigorous warders. Handera writhed greatly under the pain, uttering occasional exclamations, and evidently felt the punishment moat keonly. That the pain was acute was sufficiently demonstrated by the condition of hid back. On being liberated ho protcßtud his innocence, and then, suddenly changing his manner, expressed a desire to havo " that woman" in his power. As, however, the prisoner has, with his present experience, to reflect upon the 25 lashes yet to como his feelings will daubtlcßß bo somewhat subdued.

their co-operation in obtaining a season for shooting hares. A special meeting of the Council has been called for Thursday next to consider the petition. In connection with this, it may be mentioned that a very general opinion prevailed in this town this morning that if such permission were granted it would materially affect the ensuing coursing season, and although the hares have very much increased of late, the slaughter during one month's open Benson for shooting would [necessitate a succession of close seasons beforo

there would bo a sufficiency of hares either to bo hunted or shot. At the special meeting the Council will also consider a letter from South Canterbury asking that the coursing season may be extended to that district.
