Garibaldi's real motive for opposing the supposed Italian expedition to New Guinea is causing much speculation. In replying to a deputation at Trieste the General said he could never more be occupied in the interest of his brethren beyond the Alps.
The Prince of Wales in a letter notifies the appointment of a Royal Commission for the Sydney Exhibition. At the first meeting held to-day, the Prince expressed his wish to co-operate with the London Commission, in order to promote the success of the Sydney Exhibition.
The Bank rate of discount is reduced Lo 2 per cent. The total reserve in notes and bullion in the Bank of England amounts to £16,625,000.
LONDON, April 12
The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs has received an offer from the Sultan to depose the Khedive and appoint Halim Pasha his successor.
