ASHBURTON BUILDING SOCIETY.

The annual meeting of the shareholders in this Society was hold on Monday evoning last at the, Sectary's offices, Ashburton. The Chairman,! )Dr Trevor presided, and called upon the Secretary,, Mr Joseph Ward, to read the'iefjbft" for 1878, which was as follows :— "The> directors, in submitting their annual report, have pleasure in congratulating the members upon the satisfactory position of fcho Society's affairs, and upon the success which has. .attended its operations, Although a large increase in the expenditure haß been incurred during the year, in consequence of a change in the management, which has been placed on a, firm basis, the directors are enabled to lay .before, {the meeting a very satisfactory report. After crediting tho investment shares with7-per cent, there still remains to the credit of profit and loss, the sum of £116 4s lOd. Of thia sum tho rulos require £29 Is 2d to bo carried to tho Reserve Fund, leaving £87 3a 8d to be credited to investment shares. The accompanying .table will show the value of the.jQvpral iasues of investment shares. The directory call attention to the gratifying fact that. 11l investment shares have been subscribed, for qioce the month of August 1878. The directors! earnestly invite the co-operation of the shareholders in an endeavour to extend the, operations of the Sooiety. The following gentlemen have signified their willingness to act as directors for tho ensuing year, viz Messrs Trevor, Roberts, Bullocks, Ward, Jameson and Doherty. Mr Bullook proposed, Mr Doherty seconded — "/That the report and balance cheet as read be adopted."- Carried.

Mr Joseph Ivess moved a cordial vote of thanks to the retiring directors and the Secretary for their exertions on behalf of the Sooiefcy during tho past year. Mr Bulluck seconded the resolution, which was carried unanimously, Tho meeting then adjourned.
