RAILWAY WORKSHOPS, ADDINGTON.

Two large buildings are now in course of construction at Addington to be used as Government workshops in connection with the Railway Department. One of these buildings will bo devoted to the manufacture and repair of railway carriages and waggons, and the other is for a machine shop. The former is a large and almost square edifice covering about a quarter-acre of ground. The materials used in its construction are concrete for foundation, wood for framework, and iron for the sides. There will be only two compartments, one 100 ft x 50, and the other 156 ft x 100. The smaller room is for the manufacture of the woodwork in connection with machinery, and the larger room is for the construction of waggons and carriages. The second building, which is in close proximity to the one just referred to, will be used exclusively as a machine shop, and will contain but one room, the dimensions of which are lQlft long, 81ft wide, and 16ft high. The materials used in this shed are, as in the waggon shed, wood, iron, and concrete. Both buildings will be lighted by skylights running from end to end of either Bide of the roof. The contractor (Mr T. H. Parsons) is pushing along the work as rapidly as possible, and both sheds, will be out of

his hands in the course of a month from the present date. Tenders close to-day for the erection of a third shed — a smithy — and it is not improbable that a paint-Ehop and tarpaulin manufactory will shortly be added to the catalogue of Government workshops at Addington. There are about 30 acres of ground in connection with the buildings, and this will be transformed into yards, &c, for the storage of rolling-stock and machinery. Sidings will be laid on to all the sheds from the Addington Station, and lines of rails will pass through each building. When theße sheds are completed, the works which are now carried on in Christchurch will be removed there, where they will be conducted with greater facility than in the present sheds. Addington will then be one of the busiest suburbs of Christchurch.
