A carpenter named Maddox, lately carrying on business at Ashburton, was arrested in Dunedin this morning on a warrant charging him with attempting to defraud his creditors. He was forwarded on to Ashburton at once, in charge of Detective Neil, of that place. Mr Manders has been holding meetings in various parts of the Lake district. At Skipper's he received a vote indicative of approval of the line of action he had sketched out for himself in the ensuing seaaion. At Pembroke he received a unanimous vote of confidence, but at Cardrona ho was subjected to severe questioning at the hands of Messrs Colclough and Austin. The Mail says that Mr Austin moved a vote of thanks for the attendance of Mr Manders, but one of no confidence in him on his policy. This was not seconded, and ultimately a cordial vote of thanks was passed for the attendance of the hon member and satisfaction with the views expressed by him. Only two hands were held up against that proposition. The Suez mail was delivered in Dunedin at six o'clock this evening, eight days in advance of the contract time.
