GLASGOW RELIEF FUND.
The following letter appeared in the Lyttelton Times of this morning : — Sir, — In your report of the meefcing afc the Music Hall last nighfc, you make me say fchat in the case of Waimate Relief Fund I had received only 275, and fchafc fcoo Lite fco bo of use. My remark was this — " Apropos of church aid, I had on thafc occasion asked for the aid of the Christian churches by the devotion of their evening contributions to the relief of their neighbours, and the result was the receipt of only 27s from a district nearly 50 miles away."
If the need of help in the present case is really so great as ifc is said to be, ifc seems to me like closing the door of Christian charity, if we are fco tell the congregations that our local requirements in the shape of Maori or Melanesian Missions, Church Extensions, Lighting, or any other purposes of which fche church stands in need, are to take precedence of suffering humanity. So for my part I say, let us have all, by the special gift of the people or none. If there is to be a division of the offering, better leave the free gift to come through the ordinary outside influence I am, &c., J. OLLIVIER.
