THE WAIFS AND STRAYS OF SOCIETY.
TO TIIE EDITOQ OF THE STAR.
Sib, — As a constant reader of your valuable paper, permit me to thank you for your splendid article in yesterday's issue. As one who Las a good otiportunity of forming an opinion, I may be allowed to assure you that the case of the unfortunate child Julia M'&rath is not by ant means a solitary one. In the lanes, by-ways, and dens of this fair city, as well as on the bleak plains of the estuary, there are many— far too many — children growing up in ignorance and vice. Whether the compulsory clauses of the Education Act would reach the cases of these unfortunates I do not pretend to say, but something certainly should be done by society to rescue these poor little waifs from infallible ruin. I am, &c, HUAIANITAS. Fob. 6, 1879.
