AUCKLAND.
[SPECIAL.] Jan. 7. The poh'ce authorities are making a raid on the public houses for gambling. William Maples, of the Occidental, was fined £10 and costs. Sub-Inspector Purdy stated that on Jan. 4, gambling was continued all night by professional gamblers, and large sums of money changed hands. Defendant pleaded guilty, and in extenuation said it was allowed by the former proprietor of the house, and he thought the practice legitimate. The Magistrate, Mr Bar3tow, said that the license would certainly be forfeited in future. The following book-makers were subpoenaed — Perkins, Drake, Gardiner, Butler, Gwyde, and Sargent. The Eev — Hassard has telegraphed from London his resignation of the charge of St. Mathew's, owing to the continued illness of his wife. At the Supreme Court, Thomas Fidget, charged with placing obstructions on the railway wag acquitted.
