OAMARU.
[special.] Jan. 2. The Caledonian Society's annual games, held on Now Year's Day and to-day were very successful. The attendance was very large from all parts of the district and neighbouring towns. There were probably 5000 on the ground the first day, and 3000 the second. The weather was magnificent. There was large competition for the different events, and the arrangements of the committeo wore veiy complete and satisfactory. The following were the winners of the chief events : — Quoits, T. Little ; throwing heavy hammer, D. Chalmers, with a fine throw of 78ft 3in ; 220 yards handicap, M'Donald (Dunedin) ; putting the heavy ball, D. Chalmors, 34ffc 2in; bagpipe music (strathspeys and reels), J. Stevens ; tossing tlie caber, J. Sharp ; mile walking match, T. Clark; Highland fling, Murray 1, Watson 2, Buchanan 3 ; wrestling (Cumberland style), T. Telfer ; sword dance, Murray 1, Buchanan 2; bagpipe music, pilbroch and marches, J. Puller ; Reel of Tulloch, Buchanan 1, Murray, 2 ; wrestling (Cornish stylo), Telfer; mile handicap, O'Connor (Timaru) ; scaunfcreuso, Murray. /"The weather for tho past few weeks has 'been very dry, and the pastures, in consequence, are parched up. It is now (10 p.m.) .raining steadily. The change will be very acceptable to farmers.
