Mr Walton was very effective as Conn, his drolleries creating hearty laughter, and the piece throughout played extremely well. The performance this evening is for the joint benefit of Messrs Walton ana Haygartb, and the drama to be produced is "The Peep o' Day Boy," with new and appropriate scenery and appointments. StEAtiKO from Gab&ess.— There have been numerous complaints recently of petty thefts from various gardens, and at length one or two of the offenders have been caught. At about half-post ten o'clock on Saturday -morning a man named Crompton was pounced upon as he was in the act of stealing cabbages from a garden at Enightstown, belonging to Mr Ollivier, carpenter, and was .given into custody. In another case to be 1 beard this morning, three persons are charged with stealing a rhododendron from the garden of Mr Sutor. Bcbtok's CißCtrs.— On Saturday there were two performances at the " Great Austral'an Circus." The first, in the afternoon, 'was numerously attended, principally by -children, whose enjoyment of all that they saw and heard was unmistakably genuine ; the second, in the evening, was not so well patronised. At both the programmes were of the usual varied and amusing character. The Circus was to have opened to-night at Amberley, but arrangements have been made by which the company will again appear this evening, for positively the la3t time in Christchurch. An excellent " Olla Podrida" will be presented. Matobal Election.— A meeting of ratepayers was held on Saturday evening at Mr •C. T. Ick's auction rooms, with the object of forming a Committee to work in the interest of that gentleman at the forthcoming contest for the mayoralty. Those present then formed themselves into a Committee, Mr J. <3apes being elected permanent chairman, .and Mr W. Clifford vice-chairman. Mr Ick gave a lengthened explanation of the Carter's lane question, and also as to the purchase of a horse by the Works Committee of the City Council, about which something had appeared in print. The explanation given was considered satisfactory. After dismissing preliminary business the Committee adjonrned until to-morrow at 7.30 p.m., the chairman intimating that it would be advisable to meet every evening until the polling day.
