THE BUSH FIRE AT WAIMATE.
[PEOM OtJB OWN COBBBSPOKDBNT.] Nov. 16, 4.50 p.m. The wind has slightly abated, and the fire is spreading but not rapidly. Great damage has been done, but it cannot be exactly estimated. Some put it at £80,000. Hayes 1 , Hunt's and Bartlett's mills are destroyed, along with ' many houses. Bickman's large house and others supposed to have been burnt escaped. Much timber and firewood was burnt. The fire brigade and others were very active yesterday in saving property, and trying to check the fire. Many instances of bravery are recorded, and some narrow escapes. Mr Potts was badly burnt, and two. men had their legs broken, but some supposed to be m issing have returned. There are at least 30 families in the Immigration barracks and other places. Messrs Sfcudholme, Goldsmith, Manchester and Foreman are active in giving relief. At the Temperance Hall meeting, at noon to-day, for the relief of the sufferers, Mr M. Studholme in the chair, a committee was appointed, and £24>i subscribed in the room. The committee elected Mr M. Studholme, chairman, Mr F. Slee, secretary and treasurer. Subscriptions are urgently. required in money or clothes.' '
