Fuller particulars concerning the New Britain massacres :— About Easter time five of the Rev Mr Brown's native teachers stationed at Malicola incautiously left the coast, and went inland ten mileß. The bush natives, who are hostile to the Coast tribes, surrounded, murdered, cooked, and ate them with barbarous ceremonies. A few days afterwards an expedition organised by the Rev Mr Brown attacked and destroyed a Native village, killing from 50 to 80 Natives. Adelaide, Sept. 14. Arrived — Orient steamer Garonne. (9PECIAL TO THE "WELLINGTON POST.) Sydney, Sept. 14. The Johanna Czar, which has arrived from New Britain, reports that five Wesleyan native missionaries have been massacred by bush Natives, 10 miles from the Malicola coast. The bodies were afterwards cooked and eaten. The Rev. Mr Brown, in conjunction with the traders and coast Natives, attacked the tribe to which the murderers belonged, and a severe fight lasting the whole day ensued. Between 70 and 100 were killed, and a large number were wounded. Another attack on the Mission station was made by the Dtikc of York Islanders. The German traders retaliated, killing three Natives. France Kerwin, a Sydney trader, and two other Europeans were murdered in this attack.
