The Presbyterian General Assembly has appointed a Committee to request tho Government tbat tho Presbyterian Ohuroh bo represented on the Senate of tho Now Zealand University. In reply to an overture from Ohristohuroh and Hawke's Bay upon the supply of Ministers, the Assembly resolvod— "That all Presbyterians of the ohuroh be authorised to appoint tutors to conduot, in the form best suited to their respective oiroumstanoes, theologioal studios for students looking forward to the ministry." The Assombly passed a resolution expressivo of tbeir satisfac' tion at hearing of the weal of tho Canterbury Ohuroh Extension Association, The Bey J. Bobortson, of Melbourno, has aooopted the pistoral oharge of the Congregational Churoh of Auckland. Gbahamstown, Deo. 9. Considerable interest is being taken in the County eleotions. Already four candidates are out for Ohinomuri Biding, and all tho seats in tho County Oounoil will probably be warmly contested. Mr M'Donald, Dr Kilgour, and Mr M'Nab have beon nominated for the Mayoralty. The master of the sohooner Fairlio was finod £5 ta day for carrying away tho telegraph wires aoross the Thames rivor. Dunedin, Deo. 9. During a quarrel at Mosgiel, Mr O'Brien, leoturer of tho Amerioan War Panorama, had his eye gouged by Stanley. He suffor ed severely, hut will not lose his sight. The result of the Ladies' Shield Contest is in favour of tho City Guards j Bruoo Riflos, •eoond) West and East Taieri, third and fourth. In the aggregate prizo firing, the first prize fell to SubL ieutenant Willoox, Clutha j and the seoond to W. Willoooks, Clutha. At the annual meeting of the Walton Park Ooal Oompany, it was stated that the profits for the year amounted to £1600. Mr 0, Bright's leoture was thinly attendod. He gives a series of Sunday ovoning lectures under tho auspices of a Committee. Baloltjtha, Deo. 9. Dissatisfaction is felt in this County at tho manner in whioh the eleotions are being conducted. Many Boturning Oflloors were too late in reoeiving instructions to enablo them to comply with the Aot, and wore not supplied with Aots or forms of any kind. In many oases the officers were instruotod by the Besident Minister to write out a simple notioe of the eleotions, and post it up somowhero in their ridings. This was dono at midnight, and is the only notioe large scattered oountry districts have reoeived. No Aots oan bo prooured without sending to Wellington, and the eleotions will be over before many of tho pnblio oan now know anything about them.

Tho President of tho Canterbury Association addressed the Assombly, and a paper was read by tho Bey J. Elmslie on the stato of religion in New Zealand. Deputies were heard from tho Churoh in New South Wales, and the Foreign and Maori mission report was disoussed.
