BOARD OF EDUCATION.
A meeting of tho Board of Eduoation was held at fcb*ce o'olook yesterday afternoon, afc tho Normal Sohool. Present — Messrs John Inglia (ohairman), Wm. Montgomery, H\ R. Wobb, H. J. Tanored, J. N. Toewill, A. Dunoan, T. W. Hall, and A. 0. Knight. WOEK BY TUB OItAIBMAN. The Chaibman informed fcho Board of the businoaa transacted by him sinco tho last meeting. Ifc was approved by tho Board. GBKYTOWN SCHOOL, Some correspondence waa read in roforonoo to tho Groy town sohool. Ifc appeared that a rate had boon struok of 4d in tho £, to raiso tho sum of £19, to mako oertain improvomonts to tho sohool. Tho Sohool Committee considered that 2^l in the £ was suffloient, for tho work in question, und that it would havo covorod the amount mentioned. An opinion of Mr Garriok on the subjeot was read, in; whioh ho stafcod that if 2&d would be suffloient, then the 4d rate oould not be rooovcrcd. Ifc waa roaolved to return that portion of tho 4d rate fchafc had boon oolleoted, and not to proceed wifch any further collection. BOABD OF EXAMINEES. A lottor was road from tho Roy Mr Habons and from Mr J. 0. Vool, accepting appointments as examiners. VIEW HIIIi SCHOOL. A lotfcer waa read from fcho Chairman of the View Hill School Committee, on tho subject of tho romunoration of the master. Ifc waa ngvecd that if thero was any delay in fcho master proceeding with hia duties, he should nofc suffer therofrom. PUPIL TBAOHEBS. A letter was read from a fonialo pupil toaohor, afc tho Otaio sohool, asking that sho might not bo rcquirod to como up for examination boforo June. The application waa not granted, and ifc was decided that she must undergo examination in January. MEETINdS OF THB BOABD. It was reaolved that the regular meetings of tho Board should bo hold on the first Wednesday in overy month. HRATHCOTH SCHOOL A letter waa read from Mr H. Davis, on tho subject of the dismissal of a pupil teaohor at the Heath oo to sohool, who had failed to pass hor examination as assistant teaoher. The writer said that she had not had timo to get up hor studies. It; wai resolved to oarry out tho regulations, whioh provided thofc pupil teaohers were not allowed to remain at sohool after 17. ACCOUNTS. Several aooounts wero passed and ordered to bo paid. aLOUOBSTBB BTBBBT SCHOOL It was stated that tho bath was finished at this sohool, and that after it had been
emptied, it was found to be craoked at one of the ends. It waa roaolved that before any money was paid on account of the work to the oontraotor, full enquiries should be mado. It was aleo roaolved to ask the Committee for a fall statement of aocounts in tho matter of the bath in question. TIMABU SCHOOL. An application was made from the master of tho Timaru sonool to appoint Mr Mullcr in ohargo of the infant aohool, and to appoint an assistant master in hia stead. Mr R*at«U reported that Mr Mullev was unfit tod for tho oharge of an infant sohool. Ihe Board decided not to remove Mr Mullcr from his present position. 7BRNOB FARM SOHOOL. It was roaol rod to oall for tenders for oertain work on the Frenoh Farm Bohool, cost nottoexoeed £40. THB BOARD AND MB LBAtIH. The Chairman said he had bad an interview with MrLeaoh on the subjeot of the , non-colleoting of the elevenpenny and sixpenny rates. A letter was now read in whioh Mr Leech olaimed as compensation the sum of £160. It was resolved to take logal aivioe,and aot in accordance therewith. SWIMMING BATH WANTBD. Application was made from tbe Papanui aohool for tho ereotion of a swimming bath, at a oost of £160. The Board declined to entertain tho application at present. THH HOUSBHOLD BATB. It waa reaolved to extend the time by a fortnight for tho payment of the household rate. DATS OF EXAMINATION. The Board of Examiners proposed the 15tb, 16th, and 17th of January aa tbe days for the examination of pupil teaohers at the Normal Sohool, and the ordinary teaohers on the 21st. DRILL INBTBUCTION. A report waa read from Mr Walker, on the subjeot of drill and the gymnast io olaaaea, Ao., that ho had established at the various sohools. He reoommended the building of a gym* nasium. Ho alto reoommended the Board to offer email annual prizes to pupil teaohers. Tbe Board resolved to oontinue the classes, and to lot tho matter of a gymnasium stand over for the preaent. It waa reaolved to grant prizea to the first, seoond, and third pupil teachers, and one prise for the best soholar who had passed | the whole amount not to exoecd £7. Mr Walkor alao asked for an inorease of salary. Tho Chairman was requested to get information on the subjeot, and . to bring up a report. MASTBBS' HOTTSBB. Mr Hall read a letter from the Timaru Sohool Committee, enclosing a resolution {.aaaed by thorn, affirming the desirability of milding the head master a dwelling- houae. Mr Hall aaid he trueted the matter would be favourably considered by tl c Board. It was stated tbat instructions had been given to tho Provinoial Arohitoot by tbe Ministor for Education to prepare plans, but thoy had not boon prepared yet. The Board agreed that Timaru was an exceptional oaso. Tbe aohool was a very large ono, thero boing 850 pupils on the roll. Tho Chairman stated that oiroulars were about to be sent to tho various distriots asking for information as to requirements of the schools. Thoy had £15,000 now plaoed to thoir oredit, and whether tbey got the other £15.000 or not would very much depend upon tho requirements of the Board. Mr C. W. Montgomery moved, " That it is expedient to bave this work done as speedily as possible, at a ooat not exceeding £1000, and £200 for a janitor's house, the Chairman to oonfer with tho Provinoial Architect on the subjeot." The Chairman stated that tho plans of tbe East Ohristohuroh Sohoolmaster's houae were not at all auitable, and that fresh plana would havo to bo drawn up. Tho Board then adjournal).
