UNDERGRADUATES SOLD.

Many years ago, bofore the time of railways, the Oxford coach was full of undergraduates returning to their respective colleges. The day was oold, wet, and miserable, when a well* appointed carriage drove up to the " White Horse Cellar," Piooadilly. " Have you room for one inside to Oxford ?" asked as pretty a girl as one would wish to see on a summer day.

" What a beauty !" exolaimed one. " Quito lovely ! said another. " Perfoot 1" lisped a third. " Quite full, miss," replied the ooaohmani "inside and out."

"Surely you could make room for one," persevered the fair applioant. > " Quito impossible, miss, without the gentle* men's consent."

u Lots of room I" oried tho insides. "Wo are not very large ; we can manage to take one more.

" If tho young gentlemen consent," said the driver, who was, one of the best-tempered fellows on earth, and as honest as Ariatides " I have no objeotion." " We agree," said the insiders. - " All right," responded the driver. ■ Tho fare was paid, and the guard prooeeded to open the door and lot down the steps. ; " Now, miss, if you please — we are behind our time."

" Come along, grandfather, oried the dam»el t addressing a most respeotable-looking, portly, elderly gentleman; "the money is paid— got in, and bo sure to thank the gentlemen," at tho same time suiting the aotion td the word, and with a wioked smile assisting her rospeoted grandfather into the coaoh. \ " Hero's somo mistake j you'll squeeze us to doath !" oried the astonished undergraduates; But at that moment "All right," "Sit fait," was heard, and away rattled the coaoh at its best pace, drowning the voice of the crest* fallen Oxonians.
