AN ELECTION DODGE.

Bather an amusing inoidonfc took plaee recently at ono of tho Fronoh elections. M. Menier, tho ohooolato manufaoturor, was a eondidato for Meaux. After he had made a speech, a formidable looking working man got np and put M. Menior through his paoos. " What about Ohuroh and Stato P" demanded the inquisitor. "I am for a froo Ohuroh in[afroo Sfcoto," said M. Menier. " What about the amnesty ?" "I would pardon everybody, especially any ono born in Meaux." "What about universal suffrage and the representation of the people" "Tho people are tho ooooa, and tho National Assembly is the ohooolato ; you must use the first in order to make tho sooond." This last was rathor a " shoppy " reply, but it told very well, and M. Menier got heartily cheered. Unfortunately some ono had tho ourioaifcy to follow the working man elector, and noticed that aftor ho had gone a little way he gofc into M. Menier's oarriago and drove off fcoonofcher part of the town, where, a little lator, tho candidate for politioal distinction appeared, and made anothor speech. After he had finished, tho formidablo-look-ing working-mar oleofcor gofc up, pulled out his bit of crumpled paper, and read the same throe questions as beforo, to whioh the man of chocolate gave fche Bomo throo answers. This was rafcherja ourious ooinoidenoe, and somo one looking over tho inquisitor's shoulder recognised the handwriting on tho papers as M. Menier's own, and the inquisitor as M. Menier's gardener.
