This Day. (Before G. L. Mellish, Esq., R.M.) The Court opened at five minutes past 11 o'olook, Dbunxennebb —Two inebriates, who appeared for fcho first fcime, were fined 6s oaoh. Vagrancy.—James Kent was brought up under tho Vagrant Aofc, charged wifch indeoenfc exposure in a publio fchoroughfaro, but fche polioo not being quite prepared to go on with the oase, he was remanded till Friday. Hobses and Cattle at Labgb.—Tho following persons were fined for permitting horses and oattle to wander at large :—Elizabeth Stevens, 5s j Wm. Horwell, 5s ; John Gollan, 5s ; and Luke Adams, sb. Miscellaneous. — Patrick Sheridan, for having ridden on his dray without reins in his hand, was fined 10s.—Wm. Parker, for having negleoted on two occasions to keep a light burning on a hoarding ereoted by him at the junotion of Colombo and Tuam streets, was fined 10b for eaoh offence. —James Cain, for having a horse with large sores on its shoulders in a dray heavily laden wifch Band, was fined 10b.—James Savage, for driving on tho wrong side of the road in High street, and thereby colliding with a spring trap in whioh were a man named Gowan and his wife, who wero thrown out and severely bruised, was fined 10s.—Joseph Buggey, for pormitting tho ehimney of his houso to get on fire, was fined 10». —Wm. Hall.for oreafcing a disturbance by fighting in Manohester street, was fined 10b.— John Smifchers, oharged with having been anient from his horse and vehicle in Liohfleld streot, was dismissed with a caution. — Oharles Collins, for negligently permitting the ohimnoy of his houso in Whately rood to toko fire, was fined 10s. — Oharles Jaokson, for a similar offenoe, was also fined 10s.—Geo. Tatling, for neglecting to carry a light on his licensed cab after sunset, was fined 10s.—Oharles Beard, for having driven a horse and cart on fche Ferry road without roins, was fined 10a. Disobdbblt Cabmen.—James Reed and George Webley were oharged wifch using obscene language, and oreating a disturbance in Cambridge Terrace, near fcho Oomotery. From tho ovidonoo it appeared that the acousod went on Sunday morning, Juno 25, to a house occupied by some prostitutes, near the Cemetery, mado übo of disgusting language, broke a window, and pulled some goods out into tho stroet. Webley was very drunk, and Reed, who had his cab with him, was what one of tho witnesses termed " Bmart drunk." For oreating a disturbance Roed was fined 20a, and Webley 40b, and for using obsoono language, Reed was fined 10s, and Webloy, 20s. His Worship also ordored the police to report the matter to fcho Oity Oounoil, and to obtain tho driver's licenses hold by fcho two men, for tho purpose of recording fche oonvio< tion thereon. Jas. Reed was then charged with being absonfc from his cab on tho same oooasion as in the previous oase, and was fined 10s. ASSAULTS. —WiIIiam Smith was summoned for having violently assaulted William Walker at West Melton. Mr Thomas appeared for the defenoe. From complainant's evidence it appeared that some word a passed between himself and aooused relative to some ploughing whioh the latter had undertaken to do, but afterwards doolined to carry out. Accused made use of improper language, and oomplainant ordered him off the premises. Ho doolined to go, and complainant walkod sharply towards him, when ho took his stand by a pile of bricke, and threw eovoral of them afc complainant. One Bfcruok fche latter on the breast, and another on the head, cutting him severely, and knooking him down in a fainting state. In oroßß*examination, both complainant, and four witnesses, whom he oalled, said that tho former did sot strike aoousod afc all or attempt to throw anything at him. Acousod, in evidenoe, said that complainant assaulted him first by throwing him down, and thafc beiug in great fear of complainant who Was a muoh larger man, ho threw tho brioks to keep complainant book, and prevent
being further assaulted. A fine of 40s was imposed.— W. F. Warner was summoned for having violently assaulted A. Smith. Tho oomplainant did not appear. Acousod said he would liko to mako a short statement. Ho was oharged with assaulting a man on July 13, but on that day ho was at Temuka. (Laughter). His Worship: Probably tho complainant has found thafc oufc and noglcofcod to appear. A ohargo against J. S. Wagner of having assaulted John Thrugear, was by leave of tho Benoh, withdrawn. Throwing Stones at a Chttroh. — William Lee, a boy about seven ycara of ago, was oharged wish having thrown a sfcono at a window in tho Congregational Ohuroh on tho ovening of Sunday, July 16. S. 0. Farr gavo evidence to the effeot fchafc during eervioo on tho evening named, a stone came ogoinsfc ono of tho windows in the Ohuroh, and on going oufc somo boys ran away, bufc he suooeeded in oafcohing tho aooused, who gavo hira fcho name of another boy, as boing oonoorned in tho affair. A summons was issued for the boy but it had beon served upon fcho wrong ono. The aoousod in dofenoo said fchofcho was standing still whon Mr Farr caught; hold of him j ho was nofc running away, Ho did nofc throw a stone air all, bus a boy named Thompson did. There was also a boy named West oonoornod in fcho mattor. His Worship eaid ho was dotormined to doal severely with oil offences of this kind, and would adjourn tho oaso until tho other boys oould be summoned. INSWi/riN# Language.-- Arthur M'Mahon, for having used insulting language to ConBtablo Lonorgan while tho latfcor was on duty, was fined 10s.
