[FBOM THB PBBBS AOBNOT.]

Wbhjnoton, July 18. At the request of the Paoiflo MaU Company, tho Government have consented to appoint a coastalfpilot for their New Zealand boat!.

(Fran « f«rr«°*>OMtat •/ the Lykelton Tints.) Dunbdin, July 18. The Bruce Herald hears, on good authority, that Mr J. P. Maitland has been appointed Commissioner of Waste Lands for Otago, aad adds, that though the inhabitants of that district would be sorry to lose Mr Mainland's services as a Magistrate, they will be glad to hear of his appointment to suoh an important position in the public service. Mr Joseph Mackay, of the Brute Herald, has proved too many for the National Bank and the bailiffs. The National Bank has a lien of some description over the Bruce Herald as seourity for money advanced to Mr Mackay for speculations, wbioh up to the present at least, have not proved reproductive. The Bank, to secure itself, adopted the course of sending bailiffs to take pos session. Had not one of Mr Mackay'a employes got scent of this some days before, the issue of the paper would have been stopped, and a property worth £5000 irretrievably ruined. By the time the bailiffs took possession almost everything had mysteriously disappeared, and tbe paper came out as usual, but from Dunedin instead of Tokomairiro. So far the Bank is under the happy idea that its bailiffs have hold of everything.
