These two gentlemen were propelling themselves by turning the handles of the trolly, when suddenly Mr F. Wither, when about half-way aoross tbe bridge, was seen to fall off the trolly into the river. Some of Mr E. G. Wright's workmen ran to the snot, and quickly lifted out the sufferer, who bad tallen across a sleeper, and had evidently injured his head f and side. Mr Wither was removed to bis whate* where he remained in a semiconscious state till the following morning, when a messenger was dispatched to Geraldine for a surgeon. Mr Cummings did not arrive till six o'clook that evening and at once ordered that Mr Wither be taken on to Ashburton. Muoh sympathy is expressed for him, both by the men on the works as well as those who knew .him in the Distriot, as he is generally respected for bis amiable and gentlemanly character.
