The Star. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 24, 1876.
Some months ago there were many doubts expressed as to tbo intentions of Sir Julius Vogel. Ifc was freely asserted all over tbe Colony tbat whatever happened, he could neyer set foot in it again. Tho Agent- Generalship, a partnership in a financing firm, a seat in the Imperial Parliament witb the speedy prospect of the Chancellorship of the Exchequer— tbese and many more aspirations were said to be engaging the attention of the ex- Premier. Some abused bim for deserting tbe Colony in tbe hour of its greatest need, while others held that he had a perfect rigbt to do wbat he pleased with his talents in those markets of the world, where talents are tangible commodities. The news that bas reached us during the week has put an end to all speculations on this subjeot. Sir Julius Vogel is on hia way out in the Somersetshire, and may bo looked for some time early in January. His arrival will give rise to a fresh set of speculations. What will be do when he gets into tho House, aa he is sure to ? "Will he throw over his colleagues and join the AntiCentralist Opposition ? Will he silence ali criticism ? Will he develop further dazzling, highly original, and most specious schemes ? Will he be content with the comparatively prosaic life of a colonial town after the delights of London ? Time will furnish the answers to these queries very soon. One thing is certain, his presence in the House will be very useful in the struggle that awaits the Members, The Country cannot afford, at such a time, to do without the experience and high ability of Sir Julius Vogel.
