Tho minutes of tho previous mooting woro read and confirmed. The following roporfc from fcho Board of Examiners on tho annual examination of fccaohors and candidates waa read : — « Ohristohuroh, Fob. 15, 1875. " To tho Chairman of tho Board of Education.
" Bir,-~We havo tho honour to submit our report on tho annual examination of fcnaohora and candidates for certificates. The examination began on fcho 26fch January, and lasted nine days. Six candidafcoa presented themselves for first class certificates, sixteen for second olaaa, and thirty-six for third olaaa, or as aafliefcanfcß. Tho numbor examined in tho essential subjeofca was fiffcy-aix, and in fcho special subjeots of fcho firat and eooond claasos as follows :— Algobra, 20; Euclid, 17; Meohanioal Philosophy, 8 ; Trigonometry, 1 ; Astronomy, 8; Natural Philosophy, (5; Botany, 8; Chemistry, 1; Physiology, 1; Latin, 11 ; Greek, 2 ; English Language and Litoraturo, 5; Frenoh, 8; Gorman, 3; Ancient History, 8; Modern Hiatory, 12. Six candidatoa wero examined in mueic, and seven in drawing. Wo enoioso copiea of tho papers. Those in Frenoh and Gorman woro set; by tho Roy 0. Turrell.
" Miss Stothard, who entered for fcho first does, did not complete the examination ; and Mr 0. Sullivan, a candidate fov tho third olass, retired on tho second day. Ono candidate was dismissed for reasons which wo assign in a separate roporfc. " Sir,— l havo tho honour to roporfc fcho following results of tho examination of toaohors and candidates at Timaru in December last :— " Mv James Baird Chisholm, master of tho Geraldine sohool, is classed in tho third olaaa, the division of tho class to be hereafter decided according to his efficient conduct of hia school, " Miss Mary Anna Opio, assistant at tho Pleaeanfc Point sohool is classed as a secondclass assistant. " Miss Louisa Young, candidate, is classed as a third olaaa assistant. " I havo fcho honour to bo aiv, " Your obedient sorvanfc, " J. P. REflTl-M., " Inspector of Sohools." Tho wporfc was approved. "Wo suggest fchafc fcho soholarahips bo appropriated as follows :-*Two eaoh to olasßea A, B, 0, D, and fcho othor two to bo appliod fco classes A, B", 0, according to tho numbor of candidates in their respective claflaos. " Wo aro of opinion fchafc ifc would bo vory desirable to allow girla fco compofco for fcho scholarships. In ordor to put thorn on an equality wifch fcho boys, wo recommend that, whilo taking fcho samo papors, fchoy should ho allowed an advantage of ono year in rospecfc of ago ; ao thafc tho scholarships in classes A, B, 0, opon to boys of oloven, twelve, and thirteen rcapootivoly, oould bo open to girla of twolvo, thirteon, and fourtoon. " Thero would bo a difficulty in allowing girls fco enter for scholarships in olaaa D, as the subjeots compriao Latin, ancionfc history, &0,, and conacquontly a different aohomo of examination would bo required. churoh committoo, forwarding oopy of an advorfciaoraonfc for a hoad master, for tho approval of fcho Board. Tho Board approvod of fcho advorfciaomonfc. A lofctor waa read from fcho Timaru Committeo with roforonco to advertising for a hoad maetor. Tho Board approvod of tho course propoaod to bo takon by bho committoo. A roporfc from fcho drill-inafcruotor fov tho poat month waa read and approvod. A lettor was road from tho diatriot seorotary of tho Ancient Ordor of Forostors, offoring a scholarship for competition, at tho noxt scholarship examination, valuo £25, for tho eons of Forosters.
Tho Board decided that ifc should bo competed for under fcho samo regulations as tho Masonio scholarship last year. A letter was road from tho Cusfc oommittoo, stating that tho prico of tho two aores of land for sohool Bite waa £75, and that fcho frontago was nofc on tho Oxford road, bufc on a by-road, whioh was considered proforablo. Tho Board approvod fcho site, bufc considered fcho prico too high. A lofctor was road from tho Aehburfcon committee, stating tho roasons why thoy had nofc rocommendod tho aocenfcanoo of fcho lowosfc tender for tho sohool buildings. Tho Board approved tho aotion of tho committoo, and decided to rooommond Mr Parkin's fcondov fco fcho Government for aooopfcanoo.
A lofctor waa road fronutho Gorman Bay committoo, rocommending tho accoptanoo of Mr Houghton's tender of £509 lOs fov tho erection of sohool buildingß, according fco fcho Board's plana. Consideration of fcho matter was doforrod.
A lofctor was read from tho Kowai Pace committoo, forwarding a fcondov by Moasrs Pato and Black at £135 for tho orootion of two additional rooma to tho master's house ; also for providing a olosofc and school doaka, and stating that it was tho only ono they had received. Tho Board approvod tho tondor, and dooided to rccommond it to tho Government for accoptanoo. A lottor was road from tho Ploasanfc Valloy oommittoo, Btating thafc fcho two additional aores of land could bo obtained for £8 per aero.
Tho Board approvod the purchaso of tlie land.
A lofctor was road from tho Lyttolton oommifcteo forwarding an account from Mr Armson, architect;, in connection with sohool f urnituro and fcho orootion of a oottago, and requesting thafc if tho Board had previously sanctioned fcho paymonfc of suoh a charge aa 7i* por cent, commission on tho construction of tho sohool furniture, fco sanofc'ion ifc in this instance.
Tho Soorotary was insfcruofcodfio roply fchafc tho charges seomod oxooßsivo, and that 6 por oonfc. had only boon paid boforo, inoluding visits of inspection. A lofctor was road from fche East Ohriatohuroh committoo, forwarding the following resolution on tho subject of tho paymont or salaries from rotoa;— " That a sub-oommifctoo, conaiefcing of tho chairman, Mv Jameson, and tho mover, bo appointed to mako inquiries into all matfcors oonneofcod wifch tho oolloofcion of tho rates ; to bring up a roporfc, wifch suggestions, at noxfc meeting."
Tho Seoretary was insfcruofcod to ask fcho oommittoo fco bo so good aa to udvjao tho ratea paid in to fchoir aocounfc, so that fcho Board may know whon other funda aro required to bo placed to tho commifcfcoo's credit, and the Board will bo glad to rocoivo suggcationa, wifch rogard to ratos. Another lettor waa road from tho East Ohristohuroh committeo, asking tho Board to eanotion tho appointmont of Miaa Katherino Williama as pupil-toaohov afc S. Luke's sohool, alao of Miaa M. L. Mathowa as assistant mistress of tho girla' school, in Lichfiold Btroot, and roquoßting tho Board to inoreaae Mr Sopp'a ealary to £165 por yoar. On tho recommendation of tho Inspootor, tho appointments woro sanctioned, Miss Williama to ho ao a pupil teacher of fcho first year. Tho Inspector adviaod fcho inoroaso of Mr Sopp's salary if allowable by soalo. Tho incroaao waa sanctioned. Another lofctor waa road from the East Ohristohuroh oommittoo, requesting tho Board to sanction fcho oxpondituro of £46 for sundry improvements and arfcioloa of furnituro afc fcho South Town bolt school, and aolookafcfcho Avonaido school. Tho Board sanotionod tho oxpondituro. A letter was read from fcho Woodend committeo, applying for a grant of £20 for cortain worka and ordinary oxpondituro. Tho Board approvod tho paymonfc of tho amount. A lefcfcov was read from fcho Kakahu oommitfceo, recommending tho acceptance of Mv Curry's tondov afc £529 fov tho oreotion of school buildings. Tho Board sanctioned tho aoeeptanoo of tho tender. A roporfc by tho drill-inafcrucfcov on the proposed gymnasium at tho Normal sohools, and upon drill apparatus for other sohools was road also.
Consideration of tho roporfc was doforrod until tho preparation of tho cafcimafcos to bo laid boforo tho Provinoial Council.
A roport on tho publio schools of tho province of Marlborough by Mr R. Loo, Inspector, was laid on fcho tabic A lottor was road from fcho Yaldhurst oommittoo, again urging upon tho Board to sanction tho acooptanoo of a tondov sent in somo timo ago fov tho oveotion of sohool buildings. Tho mattor was loffc in tho hands of tho chairman to arrango. A lofctor was road from fcho Waikari committee, asking fov povmisaion fco call fov tondors for echool buildings and master's house.
Tho Soerotavy was instructed to roply fchafc as tho oatabli ohmonfc of a sohool in fchis diatriot was an oxporimont,tho Board thought it advisablo fco dofov fcho oroefcion of a maafcor's houao for the pvoaonfc, and fchafc an allowance oould bo mado to a maatov in lieu of lodging monoy ; alao, that as soon as fcho flifco was oonvoyod fco tho Supovintondanfc, tonders could bo invited for fcho emotion of tho sohoolroom.
A lofctor was road from fcho Dovauohollo's Bay Committoo, recommending Mrs Hook for appointment aa half-timo mistress afc tho Robinson's Bay sido school. On tho recommendation of tho committee, tho Board sanctioned tho appointment, subject to Mrs Hook passing tho usual examination in Juno.
Tho buflineas dono by tho Chairman during tho past wook waa road ovor and approvod. A lottor was road from tho Forneido committoo, rocommonding Mias Sarah Fhoo, of Sb. Albans, for appointment as miafcross. Tho Board decided fco forward Miss Phoo'a testimonials to fcho Board of Examination, and that hor appointmont to Fornsido bo aanefcionod, subjoofc to hor classification by tho Board of Examiners.

" Tho oandidafcos' papors aro on fcho wholo vory satief actory, but thoso of tho pupiltoaohors, oxoopfc in a fow oasos, givo vory littlo proof of systoraatio toaohing. "As groafc inoonvonionco would bo folfc if many failed in fchoir examination, I havo takon in oaoh yoar a vory low numbor of marks to oonstituto a pass. Whilo rooommonding tho Board to oxoroiso tbis lonionoy fco moot fcho present emergenoy, ifc would soom advisablo to fcako a muoh highor standard in futnro examinations.
