THE FLOODS. NORTHERN RAILWAY DAMAGED. [Pbb ANGHo-AirsTBAMAN Pbess Tekbgbaph Agency/] Kaiapoi, Sept. 29. The coach could not crosa the Waipara today, and the horses were almost swimming in getting through the Kowai. The Ashley is just fordable north of the bridge, and the river is still rising. The Waimakariri is heavy in flood in the south branch. The water is all over the road near Chainey's, and threatens damage to the railway line. The Courtonay Arms and the road towards Mr Grigg's land is under water. The north branch is rising fast at Kaiapoi j the water is nearly acrosa Charles street. The railway line is damaged again between the railway bridge and Flaxton. The water is much higher than on Thursday last, and more damage has been done. The Government sent a train to Rangiora last night, and passengers are being forwarded from one train to the other on trollies. By this means, the traffic is kept going. The water is- still rising, and a deal of damage is expected. The Drain road is under water near the Eyrelon railway formation. His family imd furniture were removed by the neighbours.- The flood is still rising. Htttt, Sept. 29. The present is the highest flood experienced here for many years. The damage is unimportant as yet. Westpobt, Sept. 29. . The river rose rapidly at 4.30 a.m., but little damage was done compared with former floods. The chief encroachment is at the corner of Molesworth street. The- old Times office, ITallas' store, and some cottages are now being pulled down. The stone groin at Nelson street has saved the lower part of the township. The Orawaiti river is flooded. News came in last night from the Lyell that there is a flood there. I : Gbetmotjth, Sept. 29. A gale of wind was blowing last night. The s.s. Waipara is high and dry, and will require launching four hundred yards. The river is flooded, but the protective workß are preventing damage in Greymouth. The river is making Berious encroachments in the town of Cobden j the Grey is running immediately behind the houses in the main street. Several buildings are in course of removal. : Post Ohaimebs, Sept. 29. The b.b. Albion could not get away last night, the weather being too heavy. She sails at : one p.m. Arrived — Tararua, at 8.30 a.m., from Lyltelton. Captain Kennedy takes command of the a.s. Easby.
