New Plymouth, Sept. 25. A stiff gale was blowing the', whole of yesterday. The sea in the roadstead was rougher than has. been known for years. Shoals of fish were washed ashore. The waves were as high as the Sugar Loaves. At high tide the sea washed more of the reclaimed land away near the proposed railway station. During the storm on Tuesday, the lightning struck a house in the country, doing, some damage.

A fire brigade demonstration took place last night. The fire brigade formed a torchlight procession from the port, accompanied by the artillery volunteers "and :i bind, paraded the 1 town, and then dined at the Masonic Hall, The Superintendent' was in the chair, and the Mayor in the vice-chair. ' His Excellency the Governor and Captain Simpson of the Blanche were guests. ; Wemlihgton, Sept. 25. Mr J. S. Williams, Registrar - General, and Judge Weston, have been holding an enquiry into certain charges of defalcations made against an officer in the Stamp Department. The inquiry is just concluded , and it is understood that the result is that there is no foundation whatever for the charges.

Railway communication to Rangiora is now restored. The 4,30 train from Christchurch will paas through. Ordinary heavy traffic can go on to-morrow. : •
