LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Monday, March 16. The Council met at the usual hour. Present —All the Councillors j his Worship the Mayor presiding. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and the outgoing correspondence was laid upon the table. The following correspondence was read and discussed : — From the Secretary of Public Works, acknowledging the receipt of Mr Henwood's scheme for supplying Lyttelton with water, and stating ifc should have fche Government's consideration. From the Secretary of Public Works re temporary magazine. From Messrs Maples, Savage, and Childs, asking the Council to allow a quantity of earth to be excavated from the premisea abutting on Oxford street and Norwich quay, and requesting the Council to give the levels. Councillor Graham considered that the work proposed would be a great boon to their property. Councillor Grange moved that permission be granted, and that the matter be left to the Works Committee. Councillor Graham seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. Councillor Grange again mooted tho question of licensed portere. He said thafc the complaints were numerous about the extortionate chargea made for carrying luggage, and this complaint had gone through the colonies, and had appeared in print; this matter ought to be seen into. Councillor Grange moved, Councillor Buist Becond cd — " That it is desirable for tho town that licensed porters be appointed." Councillor Allwright moved, Councillor Young seconded, an amendment — " That a committee, conaiating of Councillors Grange, Graham, Buist, bo formed, and to bring up a full report." The amendment was carried. Accounts amounting to £25 14s 6d were paased for payment.
