LYTTELTON.
(Before W. Donald, Esq., E.M.) Cruelty to a Hobse. — W. E. Dewey was charged with this offence. Constable Eares said his attention had been called to the conduct of the accused, who, it was stated, had most unmercifully treated a horse on the reclaimed land. The evidence of Captain Dunsford, Mr Crowley, and Mr Belgrave was taken, and fully borne out the charge. In defence, the accused handed in a letter from Mr Bradloy, and said the horse was unmanageable, and ho had not used unnecessary violence. His Worship said that, although he took no notico of what was stated outside the Court, his attention had been drawn to this matter, and, looking at the evidence given ,which was very conclusive, he wa3 of opinion that cruelty had been used to the horse, A fine of 40s, and costs, would bo imposed, and the accused could be further proceeded against for a breach of the Police Ordinance.
