The town of Lyttelton being situated .us a very small compass, it has long been felfe that Gas Works suitable for the supply o£ the town could, if worked in an economical, manner, be made to return a handsome dividend to the shareholders, the only drawback hitherto being the want of a suitable site caused by the peculiar situation of the town: itself. This the Provisional Directors har© reason to believe that they will, with fcii© co-operation of the Borough Council and ratepayers of Lyttelton, be able to overcome, as they have arranged to purchase a site which they think will be suitable for the required, purpose. The advantage of Gas Works foe illuminative and cooking purposes are foe generally known to require any particular commendation, but at tho some time^ they would point out that Coal Gas affords the cheapest and safest means of illumination yet offered to the public ; also* that with suitable apparatus, it is extensively used for cooking in both small aad large establishments, for which use :it especially commends itself on account of ite cleanliness and great economy of time and! expense. That its manufacture will afford a clieag and abundant supply of Coke and T&r^, a good market tor which can at once b* found. The portions of Lyfctelton in which tha first series of mains would bo laid embrace Norwich Quay, Canterbury, Oxford, London^ and Winchester Streets, with provision to extend wherever the demand in any part k o£ the town should warrant tho laying down of extra mains. j Careful calculations have been made by the Provisional Directors, and they have reason to believe that not more than £5003 of the capital will be required to be called up. Should a larger number of Bhares be applied for" than it iB the intention of the Directors to issue, preference will be given, fee those applicants who will probably be coti- ' sum era. j The works will be of sufficient capacity to supply about three times the present estimated demand.
