CHRISTCHURCH ACADEMY.

The usual half yearly distribution of prizes in the Christchurch Academy was made by the Very Rev. tbe Dean, on Wednesday, Dec. 21st. Before the distribution, the whole school was examined in mental arithmetic by Mr Gee, and the prize for that subject was gained by C. A. Piper. Mr Bishop'B report on the writing was' then read, concerning wbich he spolce -very favourably. This gentleman had previously , examined in French, and had expressed great satisfaction at the progress made under Mr Beechey's system of tuition, and had . stated that at the next examination he would give a prize for proficiency in that language. The Dean aaid this examination had given him great pleasure, because he had been able to go deeper into the subject on which, he had examined (Scripture) than was usual with boys of their age. He also spoke favourably of the discipline of tbe school, saying it was all that could be desired ; and noticed particularly that, in answering, questions, on no occasion had any boy guessed., The following prizes were then presented ; — French— l, Mr T. Ballard, certificate of proficiency ; 2, T. H. Bruce. Ist Division.— Good conduct, J. Beverley; Scripture, S. Jones and F. Baker; Latin, G. K. B. Wilson ; Arithmetic, Bookkeeping, Mensuration, C. A. Piper ;. Spelling, H. Stringer ; Geography, History, Grammar, W. Edgar; Mental Arithmetic, C. A; Pipe? ;

General Proficiency, C. A. Piper; Writing, W. Edgar. 2nd Division. — Scripture, A. W. Simpson; General Proficiency, G. Stringer; Writing, A. W. Simpson; Arithmetic, W.Baker; Spelling, G. Stringer. 3rd Division.— Scripture, V. Wilson ; Writing, A. Merritt ; Arithmetic, A. Bruce; Spelling, C. Stringer; General Proficiency, F. Smith. Regular attendance — A. Hawkins; this prize was given by Mr Campbell, a senior scholar. Mr Gee then stated that the school would be reopened at the premises now occupied as Gridley's Academy, on the 16th January next. *. * - - ■ , .
