Payment of Jurors. — "The Juries Act, 1868, Amendment Act, 1870 " is now in operation, and relates to the payment of all jurors on the- panel who answer to their names. Consequently, all- common jurors who were sworn at the opening, .of the criminal sittings on Monday last, hare been paid according to the ' subjoined

scale: — Residing within the city, 3s per day ; beyond the city, but not beyond seven miles, 4s ; beyond seven miles, but not beyond twelve miles, 6s ; beyond twelve miles, but not beyond twenty miles, Bs. Thkatre Rotal. — Monday _ programme was repeated last night to a thin house. The principal feature of this evening's programme is the burlesque of " Faust," in which Mr Bent will sustain the part of Mephistopheles. Meetings op Cbeditobs. — Mr Richard Davis, Deputy-Registrar, sat in the Registrar's Chambers to-day. Re Matilda Bayfield (adjourned meeting) : No creditors attending, the estate was declared to be vested in the Provisional Trustee. Liabilities, £1954 5s IOd; assets, £368 13s 6d; deficiency, £1585 12s 4d.— Re David Kirkness (first meeting): No creditors attending, the meeting was adjourned for a week. Liabilities, £86 Os 3d; assets, £20 10s ; deficiency, £65 lOs 3d. — Re William Oliver Gridley : No creditors attending, the meeting was adjourned for a week. Liabilities, £246 4s ; assets, £35 15s; deficiency, £210 9s. Rifle Association. — A meeting of the Council was held at White's Hotel last night. Present: — Mr Wynn Williams (chairman), i Mr H. J. Tancred, Captain Simmons, Captain Thomson, Captain Bird, Lieutenant Pavitt, Messrs Glassford, Barnes, and Alport. It was resolved that Captain Thomson, Lieut. Pavitt, Messrs Glassford and Alport be appointed a committee to draw up the annual report. The hon. sec. was requested to call a special meeting for Dec. 13 for the transaction of routine business connected with the range. It was stated that an omnibus ran twice a day to the range for the accommodation of riflemen, and also that refreshments conld be obtained at a cottage near the range. W False Alarms. -—Yesterday, two false oßtrms, both of a ludicrous nature, were conveyed to the Police Depot. The first was one by a man, who, seeing a large j crowd run across High atreet— afterwards shown to be caused by curiosity to see the giant Chang on his way to his audience chamber— thought there was a fire, and rah with all speed to report it at the Depot, causing all the police to be turned out for duty. The second alarm was raised by a woman, who, suffering from delirium tremens, went to the Depot, and said that she had seen a man named Hartnall throw some children into the river. Inspector Pender and those of the' police who might, have known the woman, being away at the Supreme Court, the constables left at the Depot went with the woman, and spent some time in dragging the river. Subsequently the woman was arrested as being unfit to be at large, and will be brought up at the Magistrate's Court this morning/

Aquatic. — A meeting of the Cure Boating Club was held at Kaiapoi on Monday evening. Messrs Wearing, Dudding, and H. J. Wood were elected as members of the. club. Mr R. Wright intimated his intention of moving at the next meeting that the subscription for honorary members be the same as that of working members, namely £1 per annum. It was decided that the subscription for boys should be 5s each. A crew of four handed in their names, and it was resolved that Mr Dudding's offer , to coach the boys be accepted. A further sum of £10 was voted towards the amount due for the new four-oared boat. A letter was read from Mrs Mellish, regretting that she could not comply with the wish of the club, in naming the new boat. It was stated that the boat had been launched, and that the crew had been out for regular practice. It was decided that ladies could be admitted as members on payment of 2s 6d each. The sum of £1 was ordered to be expended in the repair of the pair-oar boat, and a sub-com-mittee was appointed to see the work properly carried out. The meeting adjourned for a week.
