EDUCATIONAL RESERVES.
The following is the report of the Select Committee oh educational reserves : — The committee appointed to consider the advisableness of reserving pastoral lands for educational purposes hare considered the matter referred to them, and beg to report as follows : — In the opinii n of the committee it is expedient to provide a permanent endowment for the support of Government schools within the province by making reserves of pastoral land to an extent not exceeding 250,000 acres on the following terms : — . • • That tenders should be invitei from pastoral tenants willing to have their runs re-, served for the above purposes, and to rent such runs when reserved. The term of lease to be till 1880, and the rent which the tenderer is willing to give to be stated in the tender. The rent to commence from the time the reserve is made temporarily. The reserve to exclude Homestead Preemptive Right, and all Improvement Preemptive Rights, except those for boundary and division fences. The tenderer to waive all claim for compensation under clause 70 of the Land Regulations in respect of such boundary and division fences. The Government to exclude from the Reserve any agricultural land which 'may be contained in tbe run ; and for the purpose of ascertaining the extent of such agricultural land a detailed report shall be furnished by the Chief Surveyor, shewing the extent, quality, and position of such land in each proposed reserve. The Reserve not to be confirmed until such report has been furnished. Arthur C. Knight, Chairman.
