THE MAYOR'S CUP.

••»- . The silver cup given by Mr W. Wilson whilst Mayor of the city, and which was unsuccessfully competed for a short time ago—the minimum number of points not' being made by any of the squads— -was again fired for on Saturday afternoon,' but once' more without being won. The day was beautifully fine, but a north-east breeze of most undesirable strength prevailed, greatly interfering with the steadiness of aim. The result was that the totals were much lower than was expected, although the Engineers showed a return of their old skill, and took up a more favourable position than has been the case for some time past. This may be regarded with more than ordiuary satisfaction, as the repeated success of No. 6 Company Rifles— to whom all honour is due for the zealous manner in whioh they sustain their reputation as marksmen — was calculated •to somewhat dishearten the other corps. In common vrith all who have tbe general success of; rifle shooting in view, we therefore trust that this success may encourage the Engineers to

make still greater efforts to improve, and that it may also encourage others to follow their example. The following are the scores made on Saturday, the conditions being seven shots at each range ; Hythe position, and minimum score to win the cup, 262 points : —
