Local and General.
St Luke's Gift Auction.— The gift auction will take place to-morrow, at Spensley's Assembly Rooms (late Mr Boot's), at 1 p.m. The articles will be on view and for Bale privately by the ladies' committee from II a.m. to I p.m. Luncheon and refreshments will be provided at a moderate charge. The Incoming Suez Mail. — It will be seen, from our Australian telegrams, that the Rangitoto was to leave Melbourne for New Zealand, via Hokitika, on Wednesday last, Oct. 26. We may therefore look for mail news on Monday next, Oct. 31. United Methodist Free Churches. — The anniversary services in connection with the St Asaph street Church will take place on Sunday next, and the public tea meeting will be held on Tuesday evening, instead of Monday, as previously advertised. The Rev. J. J. Pendroy, just arrived by the Merope, will take part in the services. The Sufferers at Ltttelton. —Mr Harris, Superintendent of the Fire Brigade, requests us to state that it is the intention of that body to give an entertainment for the benefit of the Lyttelton sufferers at an early date. We also understand that arrangements are in progress for a dramatic entertainment for a similar object, by some of the members of the Ancient Order of Foresters. Woolstokt Cricket Club. — A meeting was held in the Wharf Hotel, Woolston, on Wednesday evening, for the formation of a cricket club In the Heathcote district. Mr J. B. Sheath occupied the chair. It was decided that the name of the club be the " Woolston Cricket Club," and the following rules were agreed to : — That the subscription be for working and honorary members half-a-guinea ; working members to pay sixpence a week to meet current expenses. That all new members be elected by the committee. That the business of the club be managed by a committee, consisting of five members, inclusive of the officers of the clvb — namely, captain, secretary, treasurer, and custodian ; the whole of such committee to be elected at the annual general meeting of the club; three to form a quorum. That the season commence on the Ist of October. An annual meeting (to be called by advertisement) to be held in the month of September, for the election of officers, auditiug accounts, and transaction of general business, seven to form a quorum. That all subscriptions of new members shall be payable immediately after election, and if not paid within one month "election shall be void. That as a means of getting rid of an obnoxious mem ber, the committee on receiving a complaint in writing from any member, and having decided unanimously that the conduct of the member is c&ntrary to the rules or inconsistent with the character or interests of the club, shall propose the expu'sion of such member at a special meeting to be called (by circular) for that purpose, when the majority shall decide ; expelled members to forfeit all right to the club property. That no liability shall be incurred by any officer without the consent of the committee. That any of the foregoing rules may be altered, or - any new rule introduced at the annual general meeting of the club, or at a special general meeting called for that purpose. The following gentlemen were elected : —Officers — Captain, Mr F. H. Palmer ; secretary, Mr J. W. Davis ; treasurer, Mr J. B. Sheath ; custodian,—Freeman ; committeeman, Mr J. H. Hopkins. The opening game of the season will be played next Saturday. >m*Fire. — A fire broke out in a cottage in ■roe Windmill road, about eleven o'clock this morning. The cottage was occupied by a man maned Ward, who is up country, his wife and four children being in the cottage at the time. The fire originated in an opening in the chimney, which was caused by the late earthquake. The alarm having been given, Mr Thompson, bootmaker, Tuam street, at once made for the cottage. Assisted by a lodger named J. W. Elliott, and afterwards by Mr Carter, one of the Fire Brigade, he managed to extinguish the fire after considerable exertion. But for this prompt action, there is no doubt the cottage, and perhaps others in the immediate vicinity, would have been destroyed. The Late Fire in Lyttelton.—Yesterday, several of the Indies of Lyttelton, including Mrs H. R. Webb, Mrs Gibson, and Mrs Rouse, were engaged distributing clothing, &c, to the sufferers by the late fire. During the afternoon, Mrs Cracroft Wilson, Mrs J. T. Peacock, and Mrs Harper arrived from Christchurch, bringing with them large quantities of apparel, and kindly assisted the Lyttelton ladies in the worthy object in which they. were engaged. Mr E. Giraud and Mr March also attended during the day helping the committee in distributing provisions, &c. The Lyttelton and Christchurch police have been indefatigable in attending to the duties allotted to them. A gang of men, under Mr Martindale, have been at work covering the wells and extinguishing the burning debris, In our previous notice, we forgot to mention that the lalies of Lyttelton exerted themselves in every conceivable manner in rendering assistance during the time the fire was raging at its highest, . in many instances carrying loads that some men would find a difficulty in Jifting. Upwards, of £2i 0 w.s received at the City .Council office yesterday: in aid of the sufferers by the late fire at Lyttelton. "
Magisterial. — At the Christchurch Magistrate's Court this morning, Benjamin Hall, on bail, was proved to have been drunk and incapable in the city yesterday; but being his first appearance, he was only mulcted in the nominal penalty of ss. C. C. Bowen, Esq , R.M., presided on the Bench.
