CRICKET.

The cricket ground presented a more lively ■ appearance on Saturday last than we have seen on any previous occasion. In addition to the Christchurch Club, there were no less ' than three other teams at work, and the number of spectators was greatly in excess of what is usual on any but exceptional occasions. The event of the day was the opening match of the newly-formed Christchurck Club, ana we were very glad to see so many members taking part in the game, there being 14 players on each side. Though some of the names will be recognised as having figured in previous matches, it will be found that many new aspirants made their appearance from some of whom good things may be looked for as the season progresses. The sides were chosen on behalf of the President (Mr Cox) and Vice President (Mr Wynn Williams), by Messrs Fowler and Harley, who officiated as captains of their respective sides. The former won the toss, and sent his opponents to the wicket, who were soon disposed of, none of them getting into double figures. The innings closed for the small score of 22. Odell and Fowler bowled well, especially the latter, as will be seen by the analysis. Odell was rather unfortunate, two catches being missed off his bowling; Cox made two neat catches, and Burnell disposed of Briggs, who made the longest stand for his side, by a good catch. The batting for the President's side was a decided improvement on their opponents'. Wontner, who plays in good" style, ; ran himself out when he was getting well set. He male a neat drive off Harley for 4. Maples wa9 also run out by a pretty piece of fielding on the part of Griffith. Cox played a steady innings, being in nearly an hour for his runs. ' Loughnan, who made the top score, plays in a very free style. None of the othera made > any stand, the innings closing for 58 runs. . Taylor bowled well, but the others did not seem to be on the wicket. A match has been ' arranged for Saturday next, between the i U.C.C.C. and C.C.C., and, as most of the best ' players of the province will take part in the ■ game, it is expected to prove a close and I interesting one. ■ Vice-President's Side. : W.
