TO THE BURGESSES OF THE CITY OF CHRISTCHURCH. . rj.ESTLEJiEN.-I lme been requested to stand as a candidate for civic honours at the coming E'ection. I therefore place myself at your disposal. Should you do me the honour of electing me, I will do my best to have the public funds at the disposal of the Council fairly distributed throughout the city, always preferring the useful aud necessary works to those of a purely ornamental character. I will also give my support to all measures that will be conducive to the good order, safety, and comfort of the citizens, without interfering unduly with the private rights and liberties of the people. I have the honour to be, Gentlemen, Your obedient servant, 1521 HUGH BENNETTS. FELLOW CITIZENS OF CHHISTCHURCH. I BEG most respectfully to solicit the favour of your votes, at the forthcoming election, for one of the vacant seats in the City Council. My motto is, " Advance Christchurch." lam strongly in favour of doing our utmost to raise the means for the proper, and much needed, drainage of the city, for the accomplishment of which immediate steps should be taken. I am also in favour of the establishment of public baths, aud I would be quite willing to make an effort, by way of getting public subscriptions, to insure success. With reference to the question of rates, I should like to sec them paid in two instalments, making the one payable at the office at the commencement of the financial year, and the other, say 6ix months after, upon personal application. This would make these pay* nients easier to .the poorer classes; for who cannot pay a small sum easier than a large one ? lam also convinced that in this way they would be better collected. I can assure you, gentlemen, should you do me the honour of returning me, I will do my duty. Your obedient servant, 1529 A. AVERS.
