Wellington, Aug 26, 8 p.m. On Mr Macandrew's San Francisco Mail Service resolution being reported to the House, Mr Hall moved an amendment to the effect that with a view to the establishment of a satisfactory service the Government be authorised on the termination of the present contract, to enter into a new one for a suitable service at a cost not exceeding £40,000 yearly, and, if possible, in concert with the American and Australian Governments. Mr Yogel refused to accept the amendment, and on a division it was negatived, and the original resolutions adopted, by 36 to 16. Today, Mr Moorhouse presented a petition from the Directors of the Christchurch High School, in favour of the New Zealand University Bill, and supporting Otago's claim to be made the seat of the university. The whole of the sitting has since been spent in Committee on the Bill. Mr Kolleston'a amendment, to omit clauses 4, 5, and 6, in order to insert clauses carrying out alterations in the principle of the Bill, were negatived by 29 to 23. The clauae appropriating £3000 yearly to the University was amended so as to allow the Council of the University to appropriate the money towards lectures in affiliated colleges, and carried by 27 to 14. The Bill passed after being re-committed, and the amendments made by Mr Eolleston on a previous occasion were rescinded.
