Alarm op Fire.— The fire-bell tolled forth its warning notes a few minutes before noon to-day, but fortunately the cause of alarm proved to be nothing more than a chimney on fire at Messrs Whitelaw and Dawson's furniture warehouse in Colombo street. Before the bell had been answered by any of the fire officials, active measures were taken, which speedily removed all fear of further danger. Mr H. Prince, with some others, mounted to the roof of the building, and by covering the top of the chimney with wet sacks, thus stopping all draft, extinguished the fire. Of course a largo number of persons assembled, Mr Harris, superintendent of the fire brigade, Mr Foreman West, Police Inspector Pender, several firemen and members of the fire-police, being among the earliest. Mount Herbert, in the General Assembly in the debate on "The Sales for Non Payment of Rates Bill," on July 8, 1870. It was resolTed that the chairman be requested to communicate with the Hon. It also states that the only paid officers are the surveyor and secretary, and the inspector of nuisances and rate collector, and by this dual conjunction the salaries are kept down to the moderate sum of £354 a year, and concludes by saying that a community could not well be more economically or efficiently served than the city of Nelson is served by its Board of Works.
