4. HARD LINES. TO THE EDITOR OP THE STAR. Fir, — Some six weeks ago I arrived in Canterbury from the Wett Coast, in hope of bettering my fortune in Christchurch, having heard a good deal said in favour of that town, and more in particular of its model Government. You may rest assured it was needs drove me, when I come to tell you that, were it not for the kind intercession of a few Whitechapel friends I met, who, I am very happy to say, hold a very prominent position in the Railway department, and obtained for me an occasional hour's work or so — such as coalheaving, scavengering the yard, and ao on — I should have been badly off: But, Sir, lam over three weeks installed in this occasional hourly avocation, and have not received a single sixpence as yet. Thank goodness, my baker is a very kind, feeling man, and being the only creditor (as the butchers refused to supply me), my mind is easy on that point. What I want to aay is, do you not think it a most heartless thing for a poor man to be subjected to such disgraceful and, I would say unworthy, treatment at the hands of any Government or official as this? I have been making enquiries to know how. financial matters stand, fearing my small pittance might come to grief, but I was met with the marvellous intelligence that the Treasury chest was actually lined, but Mr Rolleston being such a careful, economical, trustworthy man, that he was actuated by those motives Dot to spend one shilling until he saw his way more clearly before him. There are one or two other very omnipotent] gentlemen con- j nected with the railway, but they can give no information whatever on money matters. As I want to get clear of beautiful Christchurch, perhaps you will be good enough to give publicity to the above, whereby I may be enabled to get my few shillings. Your obedient servant, INTEGRITY.
