The schooners Kaiuma and Lady Don were ready for sea yesterday, and would , have been towed out by the Lioness, had she not struck on the hard in the centre of the river while attempting to get into the fairway with the Lady Don astern, — West Coast • Times, July 22. *__The ketch Jane Ann, Smith, master, from AKaiapoi, was brought to the wharf on Sunday, July 17, by the p. s. Dispatch, after a very good run, considering that some very severe weather was met with. While at - anchor in the roadstead, the crew made a '.^splendid haul of fish including rock cod, '■ grbper, ling, &c., and came into port with :. her decks literally covered. There was a ■ good demand, and the whole lot was cleared out iv a very few hours at excellent prices. Grey River Argus, July 19. What has long been predicted not only by ourselves, but by every person who has taken the smallest trouble to watch the course of the river for some time back, has at length come to pass. The river alongside the wharf is now so shallow, that yesterday the steamer Lioness stuck on the sand ridge, extending to the lower wing-dam, and that at, the top of high water. The tides are certainly at the neep, but it is a disgrace to think that a steamer of the Lioness' draught of water should be prevented, from getting out of the * port, when it is taken into consideration that this difficulty could have been prevented had the members of the Borough Council been more addicted to the taking of active measures then talking about what should be done. Only lost week, on the best authority we have here, they were advised to have the wing-dam Ruby removed. The necessity of ■ this being done at once was pointed out; yet, in the face of that the matter was referred to a committee for consideration, and another week or ten days lost. And what i 3 the result of their dilatoriness throughout ? The wharf is now inaccessible to the steamtug, and of course the vessels in harbour are .iv a state of blockade from the same cause. - —- West Coast Times, July 22.
