Lateat Telegrams.
■Wellington, May 31, 5.40 p.m. The result of yesterday's deputation, to the Government is regarded as extremely unsatisfactory. People are dissatisfied alike with Mr Vogel's explanations and Mr Pearce's statement. Some anxiety is felt here regarding the fate of the schooner Isabella Jackson, 40 tons, "Watson, master, which, left here for Lyttelton on April 28, with 20 tons of coal, and has not been heard of since. A system of telegraphic money orders has been arranged, and will be brought into operation immediately. The first month of the reduced telegraph tariff shows an increase of 5015 messages over last month, under the old tariff, but a decrease in revenue of £145 12s 6d. A private letter from Dr Featherston states that Sir Gh Grey is likely to stand and be elected to parliament for Newark. He also believes it is finally arranged that Brogden and Co. (great railway contractors) will send a staff to survey and report upon the Nelson and Cobden Eailway. If so, Mr Brogden is quite willing to entertain a scheme for establishing a system of railways throughout the North Island, capital being no great object with him. Mr Featherston was going down with Mr Brogden to North "Wales, to inspect a railway there with a two-foot gauge. This, though at present laughed at by engineers, seems likely to be extensively adopted. It is perfectly safe with a speed of 30 miles an hour, and the cost is diminished £1000 a mile for every foot of gauge reduced.
