Local and General.
Rakaia Election. — The numbers polled lay each candidate at the late election were as follows :-The Hon. J. Hall, 46 ; Mr. J.. D. Enys, 41 ; Mr. J. Jebson, 25. Mb Fox. — We understand that, in response to a numerously aud influentially signed requisition, Mr Fox will address the electors of Christchurch at a public meeting in the Town Hall, on Thursday evening next. . Geraldine Election. — The nomination of two members for the Provincial Council took place on May 8. There were three candidates, and the election was determined By the show of hands, as follows : — Ormsby, 21; Walker, 11; Gosling, 9. Lyttelton Volunteer Artillebt. — We arc requested to state that the gold medal presented to this Company by Mr. W. H. Hargreaves was won by Farrier Childs. Sergeant-Major Kerr made the highest score, but he is not entitled to the prize, he being a staff officer. Port Victoria. — The election of a member to represent this district in the Provincial Council took place at noon yesterday. Major Hornbrook was proposed by Mr David Gebbie, and seconded by Mr Forster. No other candidate being proposed, Major Hornbrook was declared duly elected. Mesmerism.— Dr. Carr gave a lecture on Mesmorism and Phrenology at the Colonists' Hall last night. The room was crowded by an audience who seemed to be greatly amused by his experiments. Dr. Carr will give another lecture this evening, and we can recommend those who have not seen or heard him to pay him a visit. Theatre Koyal. — There was only a middling attendance at the Theatre Eoyal last evening. To-night is fixed for the benefit of Miss Jennie Nye, and the programme will comprise the second act of the " Ticket of Leave Man," the farce of " The Laughing Hyena," and the burlesque of " Don Giovanni." Miss Nye deserves a good house. Electoral. — Mr. Hood, one of the candidates for the representation of the Sefton District in the Provincial Council, addressed the electors at the School-house, Leithfield, on Friday eveniug — Mr. J. H. Moore presiding. Mr. Hood briefly stated his views on the subjects of Immigration, Public Works, and Education ; and, in reply to questions from an elector, said he was in favour of a reduction of the dog tax with respect to shepherds' dogs, and would also advocate a better system for the registration of voters. A resolution that Mr. Hood was a fit and proper person to represent the district in the Provincial Council was proposed j by Mr. Lewton, seconded by Mr. James! Russell, aud carried unanimously.
