A public meeting was held at Fatea last night, to consider the Government order permitting the return of natives to this district. The following resolution was carried! "That this
meeting having hitherto had every confidence in the Government, requests that the order published in the Herald of 26th. March be cancelled, as the return of any natives between "Waingongora and "Waini, with the sanction of the Government, will cause grave complications and probably a renewal of trouble, and the meeting also trusts that Government will reconsider their decision, and let the natives be kept away from the district for some time to come." The meeting was large, and the proceedings were orderly and animated. Napier, April 1, 4.11 p.m. Yesterday, 50 members of the late Colonial Defence Force drew for choice of allotments of land at the Ormond military settlement in Poverty Bay ; they leave to-day by the Uangatira, and will immediately be placed on their land. The Government are calling for tenders for the erection of a block-house in this settlement, which will protect the township of Gisborne, offered for sale by the Government on the 13 th inst.
