LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Monday, Feb. 7. Present: — Councillors England, Allwright, Bunker, Young, Stout, Lis Worship the Mayor presiding. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Clerk stated that he had received during the week — Rates, £25 4s 3d; rent of store in Oxford street, £21 ss. A letter from Mr J. Ward, desiring a remission of Mrs Armitage's rates on account of long illness, was read. The application was agreed to. The report of the Inspector of Nuisances was read. It stated that notice had been given to Mrs Sudden and Mrs Gibbons to abate a nuisance. Js?he Works Committee's special report on the Sumner road was read. It drew the Council's attention to the bad state of the road from the zig-zag to the Sticking Point, and also that the culverts were stopped . up and required clearing out. The expense of repairing the zig-zag road would be £10. The question of repairing the Sumner Road led to a discussion. Councillor England moved, Councillor Stout seconded, and it was resolved, " That the Government be requested to reimburse the Council in any outlay incurred in repairing the road from Sticking Point to the zig-zag. Accounts amounting to £18 4s 3d were passed for payment. His Worship moved the notice standing in his name — " That a petition be presented to his Excellency the Governor of New Zealand,
praying that the land held under 'The Peacock Wharf Ordinance, Section VIII., No, 9 '; and • Peacock Jetty Extension Ordinance, Session XXIV., No. 9, 1866 '; and all the land reclaimed from the sea, consisting of nine acres, more or les3, on the south side of the town of Lyttelton, be annexed to the borough iv accordance with the provisions of Clause 1 8 of ' The Municipal Corporations Act, 1867.'" He considered the Council was fairly entitled to have this land under their control. He thought it would be better before sending the petition to consult his. Honor the Superintendent on the matter, and have an interview. He would have a petition drawn up, and submit it at their next meeting. Councillor England seconded the resolution, which was carried. The question of the water supply was again mooted. Councillor England thought that a large supply might be obtained from the new grain and wcol sheds, and tbat the pipes given to the town might be made available for that purpose. It was resolved to leave the matter in the hands of Councillors England and Allwright to devise some plan, and report at next meeting. The Council then adjourned.
