The Star. TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 1870. THE MATOAKA.
Considerable excitement was caused *tl Christchurch and Lyttelton this morning, when it became rumoured *hat a telegram had been received from Hokitika, announcing the arrival of the Matoaka in Melbourne.
The facts* bo far as we have been able to ascertain them, are as follows. Sarly in the' morning, a telegram was .seceired [by Messrs E. S. Dalgety and Co., from .a gentleman at Hokitika *Fnis simply stated that the Gothenburg, : which arrived from Melbourne At 11 o'clock last night, had brought eiews to the effect that the Matoaka fead arrived at Melbourne. A little inker in the day Mr Kennaway informed ;«S£ that he had received a telegram from Captaiu Gibson, which stated that! the Matoaka had arrived at Lon<(pi: Later still, Messrs Miles and Co. saceived a telegram, of which the following is a copy :— " ; Gothenbnrg " brings news arrival at London " instead of Melbourne." i
These are the facto which came to fe&nd early in the day, and it will be oaaily uuderutood that they raised conflicting opinions. It appears that fcbjqre was at first no means of com- ! «nunicating with the Gothenburg except by signal, and that the news jlbout the Matoaka was received on ;,ffhore in this manner. 'About noon, ■ fche Gothenburg was tendered, and is I vcas then clearly ascertained that intelligence had been received in Melbourne to the effect that the Matoaka ■ laad arrived in London. ■It is yet important to kuow how the news reached Mcl bourne. ' : .
Shortly after the news was re-
-ceived ia Lyttelton, the vesselß in '. I karbonr, the principal merchants' j, j offices, and many of the stores dia;j>%layed bunting. ! ' /•• .
